Trunk Show

Local poster artist Clinton Reno will bring his entire collection of prints and posters to Wholly Craft for a one-night only event! Be the first to snag brand new works from the artist (or the last of a limited edition print!) and take your time to peruse his selection to pick out your favorites. Reno has designed and screened posters, CD Artwork and T-Shirts for hundreds of acclaimed rock bands, including Coldplay, My Morning Jacket and Interpol. His critically appreciated work has landed him in a variety of art shows in cities across the map and his work has also been featured at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and numerous Flatstock poster conventions.

Sewing Lab: Machine Basics
Thursday, November 4th; 6-8pm
Class Fee: $22
Supplies needed: a working sewing machine, your sewing machine manual (if you have it), a bobbin, any extras that came with your machine (feet, disks, etc…), sewing scissors, sewing pins, a spool of all purpose thread, scraps of cotton quilting fabric measuring around 18” x 22”
Did you get a new sewing machine? Do you spend more time staring at or fiddling with your sewing machine than actually putting it to use? Emily of Umbrella Girl Productions has been sewing for over two decades and can certainly help you win the battle between human and machine. She specializes in older models but can also work a basic modern machine (no computerized models, please). We will complete a sewing techniques sampler in class to help you practice with your machine. Proper maintenance and care will also be covered during this lab. In order to ensure personalized instruction, the lab is limited to 4 people, so reserve your spot quickly!

Supplies needed: a working sewing machine and manual (if available), two fabric scraps measuring 18” x 22” of light to medium weight cotton quilting fabric (one for the lining and one for the exterior), one 7” zipper, a spool of all purpose thread and a bobbin,

Using an adorable pattern featured on Craft Zine by Skip to My Lou, instructor Emily Westenhouser will help you create a pleated zipper pouch. This class is perfect for the beginning seamster who has a basic knowledge of their sewing machine. We will learn pattern layout, sewing in a zipper, adding a lining, and pleats. Materials Needed: size 11 or size 13 knitting needles and two skeins of worsted weight (medium thick) yarn.
Keep your hands busy with a skill that’s both relaxing and productive! Knitting creates calm and a plethora of warm accessories and great gifts. This class is for absolute beginners---we’ll start with the basics and move on up to some serious scarf making. Seasoned knitter Adrienne of Crafty Beavers will teach us casting-on, basic knit and purl stitches and combinations, as well as casting-off. In this class we’ll make an cell phone cozie and start work on a scarf.

Spinning Wheel Primer

Have you thought about purchasing a spinning wheel but want to try it out first? Lexie of Balaton Fibers will cover the basic parts of the spinning wheel and what to look for when purchasing a wheel. Each student will take home a yarn sample they spin. This is a small class so sign up fast!

Create your own nest of unique amigurumi creatures! From cuddly to creepy, you’ll learn the design and crochet skills necessary to create any style of creature you prefer! In this class, you’ll learn how to make common shapes used in amigurumi and sketch and design your own creature. Amigurumi techniques and tips will be taught and immediately employed in the creation of your very own one-of-a-kind crocheted pal. Intermediate class: basic crochet skills required.

Get ready for Thanksgiving dinner with a beautiful hostess apron! Make it for yourself or as a gift for your holiday host! In this class, you’ll use a kit featuring pre-cut fabric pieces in a variety of delicious designer fabrics to sew up the project in one short evening. Instructor Carolyn Deer will guide you though the ins and outs of completing a full apron and you’ll walk away with the skills and step by step instructions to complete many more on your own! This is a project for advanced beginners—basic sewing skills required.

A simple project that will have you sewing and toting in no time! Spend a Saturday afternoon learning or refreshing basic sewing skills to create a sturdy and colorful tote bag. The oilcloth bag is waterproof and just wipes clean and will get you used to working with thick, heavy duty materials.

Cross-stitching is not just about ducks on pillowcases anymore! In the class, you’ll use a kit from Subversive Cross Stitch to get started stitching away on your own sassy saying. She’ll also provide trouble-shooting guidance for common knitting mistakes like the dreaded dropped stitch. New to zines? Thinking about writing and distributing a zine but don’t know where to start? Start with this workshop! Here, you’ll learn a bit about the history of zines and their cultural significance before embarking on a project of your own. You’ll construct your own mini-zine over the two sessions and learn about distribution channels in the final session.

A super fun, easy-to-learn craft with tons of possibilities! With the basic skills you learn in this workshop, you can create any number of 2D and 3D objects and creatures made entirely of wool. In the workshop itself, you’ll learn a dry needle felting technique and use this to create a 3D needlefelt appliqué on flat felt background. It fun and great for beginners!

Intermediate Knitting

5 year Anniversary Extravaganza!

Celebrate five years of handmade fun at the Wholly Craft Anniversary Extravaganza! Join us on Friday, October 1st from 7-11pm for a storewide sale and anniversary blow-out featuring some of our favorite community partners. Bird and Flower will kick off the evening with a special live performance. Local designer AmyD will present a fashion show featuring her latest looks modeled by The Ohio Rollergirls with hair and makeup by the stylists at Lucky 13 salon. Thought Co will be on hand all night for live screenprinting—bring your own shirts or have one created on the spot. Explosive doorprizes from Stinkybomb Soap will be doled out throughout the evening. And, no party would be complete without cake—in this case, a delicious Pattycake cake!

We so excited to be celebrating five years and so grateful for all the support this community has given us! So, thank you, thank you, thank you to all of our crafters, patrons, and supporters—we’re raising a glass to all of you and hope you can join us to celebrate and kick off the next five years!

Do you dream of having a stitched pinup or darling dachshund on your pillow or skirt? Well here’s your chance to make it happen! In this workshop, you will learn several basic embroidery stitches and how to put them to use in your own designs. Also, you’ll learn multiple fun and easy image transfer methods to ensure that almost any image will be ready to be rocked (with an embroidery needle) onto your fabric. Local designer and super fun instructor AmyD has been incorporating embroidery into her designs for years and will share all the best tricks of the trade!

Project Sew: Chalkcloth Banner

Banners and bunting are all the rage these days! Colorful flags make any occasion seem festive and can be used over and over again. The banner you’ll create in this workshop is extra special—one side of the flag is made of chalkboard cloth so you can write a new message for each occasion. This project is beginner level and is a great introduction to working with thicker fabrics like oilcloth. All materials are provided—you are welcome to either bring your machine or share the one provided.

Instructors Wanted!

We’ve recently revamped our class policies and instructor contracts and we’re looking to add to our class roster for the fall. Our shop specializes in beginner and intermediate level classes in a wide variety of craft skills. Potential instructors must have at least 5 years experience with their craft medium and some teaching/training experience.

If interested, please email whollycraftclasses@yahoo.com with your contact information, a summary of your teaching/training experience and detailed descriptions of the classes you would be interested in teaching. Queries must be received by 12pm on Friday, August 20th.

If we think we might be a good fit, we’ll email you with details on our class policies and teacher compensation and ask for a formal class proposal and in-person interview. Interviews will be conducted next week and classes will begin in October.

Rip a hole in your favorite sweater? Attacked by moths? Live with a cat who eats socks (I do)? Learn the lost art of mending knitwear! Beckie will show you the basics of darning clothes that have seen better days. You’ll be busting out that favorite cardigan again in no time! The instruction part of the class will only last about 30 minutes, so feel free to drop in at any point between 7 and 9pm!

Unflattering Portraits By Rev. Aitor

Why put your best face forward when you can treasure a hilariously unflattering portrait of yourself for years to come? Words can not do these portraits justice, so here’s a li nk to the gallery of unflattering portraits! A couple of lucky folks have the opportunity to have their own portraits done this Thursday! We will learn pattern layout, sewing in a zipper, adding a lining, and pleats. Handmade Nation Screening and Crafty Cotillion Trunk Show!

We're so excited to co-sponsor the Columbus premiere of Handmade Nation, a documentary by Faythe Levine chronicling the rise of the indie craft movement. And, the screening is held in conjunction with our Spring Trunk featuring new works from our members.

The screening will be held Saturday, May 8th at 3pm at Studio 35 (3055 Indianola Ave.). The trunk show will precede the screening from 1-3pm. Arrive early to enjoy a beer and shop for the perfect handmade Mother's Day gift.

The first show features all-new artwork from Carolyn Slebodnik, a young community minded artist and member of the Cowtown Lowbrow and CAW (Creative Arts of Women) collectives. According to the artist statement, the floral themed “paintings in this show are all about me longing for the future. The flowers represent spring and hope to me. The winter is getting to me and I need the colors of spring and images of spring to get me through the rest of this horrid winter season. Flowers can hold so many meanings and currently a number of them apply to me and I think that made me very interested in creating paintings with them."

Renowned poster artist Jay Ryan and critically acclaimed author and artist Paul Hornschemeir are touring the nation for the release of their latest respective books, Animals and Objects in and Out of Water and All and Sundry. We’re thrilled that they’re making a stop at Wholly Craft this week! Join us at 7pm on Friday the 13th for a book discussion and signing with the artists and find out more about their process and collected works. Here’s a little bit about the fellows:

Jay Ryan has been making screen-printed concert posters in Chicago since 1995 in his shop called the Bird Machine. Known for his hand-drawn type, humorous animal subjects, and muted color selections, he has worked for thousands of rock bands such as the Melvins, the Shins, Modest Mouse, Andrew Bird, the Decemberists and Built to Spill. His newest book solidifies Jay's position as one of the most unique postermakers in a thriving and exciting field and features 120 favorite pieces of art from the last three years, including text about each of the prints, original drawings and a foreword by Andrew Bird. When he's not playing bass in his band Dianogah, Jay lectures students and shows his prints at universities and galleries across the U.S. and Europe. Known for his sad, quiet honesty, rendered in his signature deceptively minimalist style, Porcellino’s new book Map of My Heart celebrates the twentieth anniversary of his seminal and influential comics zine, King-Cat Comics, which he began self-publishing in 1989. In this collection, Porcellino, while living in isolation and experiencing the pain of divorce, crafts a melancholic, tender graphic-ballad of heartbreak and reflection.

The Nitty Gritty Girls have struck! Come check out awesome art at the front of Wholly Craft! Earlier this summer we were contacted by this clandestine group of girl graffiti artists looking to give us the gift of free public art. Of course we agreed and waited anxiously for them to strike. This week we heard reports that a couple folks in disguises were working on something in front of the shop--it was them! The pink factories and giant needles look so great--I wish it was permanent. But alas, the installation is temporary and will wash away after a few rains. Be sure to come see it before the storms!! This is super exciting and we're honored to be one of their "targets"!

While making a fun and stylish tote we will learn: finishing edges without the use of a serger, adding pockets to a bag, and sewing in a zipper. Please bring your sewing machine, a light weight upholstery fabric or denim*, a 10 inch zipper, all purpose sewing thread, sewing pins, and scissors.

In this workshop, you will learn several basic embroidery stitches and how to put them to use in your own designs. Also, you’ll learn multiple fun and easy image transfer methods to ensure that almost any image will be ready to be rocked (with an embroidery needle) onto your fabric. Local designer and super fun instructor AmyD has been incorporating embroidery into her designs for years and will share all the best tricks of the trade!

Do you have a drawer of old T-shirts that never see the light of day? Bust them out and learn to transform them into fashions you’ll be itching to wear! We’ll use the rest of the workshop time as a lab to test our new-found techniques and create some fashion visions on the spot! Aitor of the Misanthrope Specialty Co. and we were lucky enough to arrange a last minute trunk show for you! They’ll be bringing out the full line of their work at the shop from 12-5pm on Sunday, so this is not to be missed. Sweetie Pie Press is a one-woman, one-inch button empire with hundreds of original designs and fabulous limited edition artist-series buttons. In addition to selling his prints and illustrations, Rev. Aitor will be taking appointments for Unflattering Portraits (as seen on CBS Sunday Morning with Mo Rocca!)—please call 447-3445 or email us at whollycraft-at-yahoo-dot-com to set up a 45 minute appointment for your portrait. Join Allison Chapman of Igloo Press for an evening of letterpressprinting and bookbinding love. Allison recently moved to Columbus after more than a decade of teaching at Minnesota Center for Book Arts in Minneapolis. In addition to traditional hand-sewn journals and albums, a variety of refillable books and bookbinding kits will be available.

The No-Sew Refillable Book is an exclusive design featuring a clever elastic spine that requires no bookbinding knowledge to change the content. These books are based on standard paper sizes making it easy to add or remove pages as desired. Based on Allison’s experience as a bookbinding instructor, Build-It-Yourself bookbinding kits include directions and supplies for both traditional and non-traditional bindings. From a simple pamphlet stitch to the multi-section exposed spine, kits are appropriate for both beginner and intermediate crafters.

Prints and decorative papers are inspired by the alphabet and geometric patterns. Prints are created from photopolymer plates as well as hand-set metal and wood type on platen presses or a Vandercook#4. In addition to new designs, many greeting cards feature the illustration collection inherited from her grandfather. A special 15% discount will be offered for custom letterpress andbookbinding orders for Wholly Craft customers through May.

In this class, taught by our newest instructor, local seamstress Carolyn, you will create a basic quilted placemat for your dinner table. Over two sessions, you will learn the basics of quilting including marking pieces, reading patterns, and introductory quilting and binding skills. We will also be discussing selecting materials and quilting notions. Please bring your sewing machine, pins, and scissors. Precut material will be provided. If you do not have a machine and still wish to learn this pattern using hand-sewing skills, you are more than welcome to join us.

Join experienced seamstress and new instructor Carolyn for a fun and exciting afternoon of creating a handmade gift from the heart. Do you already know the basics of knitting? Well, it’s time to take it to the next level—knitting in the round! In this class, you’ll learn all the skills necessary to create a striped hat. DIY Amigurumi

Create your own nest of unique amigurumi creatures! From cuddly to creepy, you’ll learn the design and crochet skills necessary to create any style of creature you prefer! In this class, you’ll learn how to make common shapes used in amigurumi and sketch and design your own creature. Amigurumi techniques and tips will be taught and immediately employed in the creation of your very own one-of-a-kind crocheted pal. Intermediate class: basic crochet skills required.

Needle Felted Valentines

Tis the season to create a valentine straight from the heart! And, in this case, you can pick up a great crafty skill while you’re at it! In this workshop, you’ll learn a dry needle felting technique and use this to create a 3D needlefelt appliqué on flat felt background. Your sweetest peas will be ever so pleased! Cat-Toy Workshop to benefit Colony Cats
Sunday November 2nd

Please join us for the first in a series of workshops designed to help local charities through crafting! November’s workshop will focus on making catnip-filled cat toys that will be sold by Colony Cats volunteers to raise money for their great organization. Colony Cats is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides community assistance with spay/neuter and rescue/adoption, as well as specialized help for feral cats. This workshop is free and all materials are provided. No experience necessary! Come out to learn a new skill, work on a fun project, and help kitty cats!
P.S. Please note the kitty in the photo is in need of no help. He subsists quite nicely on a diet of cat food, kitty treats, and my socks. He also enjoys long walks through the living room and vigorous rubbing.

Next Step Knitting: Cabled Hat

Thinking of moving beyond the knitted scarf? Libby of Wonderknits will be in the shop to guide you to the next level. Learn how to make a lovely cabled hat in two fun sessions! Two Part Book Arts Survey

Come join us and learn the skills of book arts. Students will learn the basic ins and outs of the fascinating processes of papermaking and bookbinding, and will take home a completed hand-made book. A demonstration from the pulp preparation to the finished sheet is followed by a hands-on activity in which each participant makes a piece of paper using his or her own pulp recipe and technique. In the second session, the paper sewn together to make a hand-bound book.

Polymer Clay Jewelry

Learn how to make fun, funky jewelry out of polymer clay! In this class, learn a unique but basic polymer clay technique that will result in an eye-catching piece of jewelry. We will go over the basics; how to condition clay, make a jelly roll as well as simple techniques to give your piece a swirled-effect. The instructor will also go over basic tips in regards to clay storage, baking temperatures and care. In this class you can make a ring with an adjustable base (one size fits most) or a pendant. There will be an assortment of colors to choose from. Please specify if you want to make a pendant or ring when registering for this class.

Think you need a lawn to start a garden? Think again! Community Gardener of the Year Trish will help you design and build your own mobile garden to take home and bloom. You’ll learn the lasagna layering technique for creating a thriving mobile garden. Most materials will be provided, including basic seeds, but please bring any specific plants (flowers or herbs) that you’d like to include in your garden.

Product Photography

Are you frustrated that your photos always look flat and washed out? Annoyed with weird shadows and yellowy casts? Don't despair! Join Amy Neiwirth of Sweet Stella Designs to explore various techniques to help you get the best product photos possible. Learn about cheap and easy lighting, exposure compensation, and light diffusing. Also learn some quick Photoshop tips to fix photos that didn't come out so great. At the end of the class, you will be creating your own home-made light boxes to take home and use!
Materials Fee: $5 Please bring your digital camera, a utility knife, a cardboard box (about 12 x 12" or larger) and 3 of your creations to photograph. All other materials will be provided.

Tshirt Reconstruction

Do you have a drawer of old T-shirts that never see the light of day? Bust them out and learn to transform them into fashions you’ll be itching to wear! You’ll love the blend of comfort and style that results! In this workshop, we’ll cover several no-sew and simple techniques that can be used in a variety of projects. Then we’ll transform a couple of shirts into new tops and skirts on the spot.

Personalized Stepping Stones

Craft Camp goes on the move to this Community event! Get outdoors and bring the entire family to this workshop taught by Trish, Columbus’s very own Community Gardener of the Year. You’ll forgo the overpriced, store-bought kits to learn DIY techniques for making personalized stepping stones for your garden or outdoor space. Everyone will walk away with 1 stepping stone and the skills needed to make many more. Please bring any small objects (e.g. matchbox cars, jewelry, buttons) you’d like to embed in your stone and a garbage bag to transport it home.

3D Needle Felting

Intermediate French Beaded Flowers

Roses are timeless—especially this one, which will bloom for longer than a lifetime! Expanding on the skills learning in the intro class, we will create an exquisite black rose with baby’s breath, ready to display in your home or use as the prefect gift. We will read a complete pattern, tape stems, learn to assemble and finish a complete flower, and practice sculpting the flower into a life-like shape. We will also discuss books, supplies, resources, and tools that will help you continue to learn this amazing craft.

Do you spend more time staring at or fiddling with your sewing machine than actually putting it to use? Emily of Umbrella Girl Productions has been sewing for over a decade and can certainly help you win the battle between human and machine. She specializes in older models but can also work a basic modern model (no computerized models, please). Proper maintenance and care will also be covered during this lab. In order to ensure personalized instruction, the lab is limited to 3 people, so reserve your spot quickly!

Sew Basic
Saturday August 23rd., 3-5pm

Whether you’re looking to create a fashion vision or just alter a piece that no longer fits, this is the class for you! Emily of Umbrella Girl Productions will be back to teach some basic hand sewing skills and demonstrate several sewing techniques to make and alter simple garments. Additionally we will talk about patterns, selecting fabrics, and sewing notions. Please bring a shirt or skirt you’d like to learn to alter.

Project Tote Bag
Sunday August 24th, 1-3pm
Class Fee: $15
Need a better bag to carry all your projects-in-progress? How about a simple sewing project to refresh your skills? Well, you’ve found just the right workshop! Super crafty local designer Amy D will guide us through creating the perfect tote bag using a Burda Style pattern is that easy-to-follow and perfect for beginners. The instructor is tons of fun, and the project is gorgeously functional. And you’ll walk away with newfound skills along with your awesome bag. This is not to be missed!

Advanced Book Arts
Wednesday August 27th and Thursday August 28th, 6:30-9pm
Class Fee: $35
This two-day intensive course will build upon the skills learned in Book Arts Survey (2 or 3 part) classes earlier this summer. Students will learn advanced techniques for papermaking, printing , and bookbinding and will leave with the knowledge and ability to create permanent pieces of art.

Back to School Scarf
Saturday August 30th, 1-3pm
Class Fee: $15
As camp ends, school must begin! At this point, scarf season is quickly approaching. Get ready for fall with a Mistake Rib scarf in your school colors—or just your favorite colors!
Skill Level: Advanced Beginner
