Holiday Hours and Website!

Hey Friends,

The good news is that we have a brand new website! Check it out at www.whollycraft.com

The bad news is that we're still working out some of the glitches on the site, so until all is clear, we'll be double posting some of the pertinent news on events and classes on this blog.

And more good news....we've expanded our December hours for the holiday season! Visit us in person:

Curated by Stephanie Rond, this unique show features new works by the Gerdemans (no relation). Trunk Show


Local poster artist Clinton Reno will bring his entire collection of prints and posters to Wholly Craft for a one-night only event! Be the first to snag brand new works from the artist (or the last of a limited edition print!) and take your time to peruse his selection to pick out your favorites. Reno has designed and screened posters, CD Artwork and T-Shirts for hundreds of acclaimed rock bands, including Coldplay, My Morning Jacket and Interpol. His critically appreciated work has landed him in a variety of art shows in cities across the map and his work has also been featured at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and numerous Flatstock poster conventions.

November Classes!

Sewing Lab: Machine Basics
Thursday, November 4th; 6-8pm
Class Fee: $22
Supplies needed: a working sewing machine, your sewing machine manual (if you have it), a bobbin, any extras that came with your machine (feet, disks, etc…), sewing scissors, sewing pins, a spool of all purpose thread, scraps of cotton quilting fabric measuring around 18” x 22”
Did you get a new sewing machine? Do you spend more time staring at or fiddling with your sewing machine than actually putting it to use? Emily of Umbrella Girl Productions has been sewing for over two decades and can certainly help you win the battle between human and machine. She specializes in older models but can also work a basic modern machine (no computerized models, please). We will complete a sewing techniques sampler in class to help you practice with your machine. Proper maintenance and care will also be covered during this lab. In order to ensure personalized instruction, the lab is limited to 4 people, so reserve your spot quickly!

Project Sew: Zipper Pouch

Supplies needed: a working sewing machine and manual (if available), two fabric scraps measuring 18” x 22” of light to medium weight cotton quilting fabric (one for the lining and one for the exterior), one 7” zipper, a spool of all purpose thread and a bobbin,
sewing scissors and straight pins
Using an adorable pattern featured on Craft Zine by Skip to My Lou, instructor Emily Westenhouser will help you create a pleated zipper pouch. This class is perfect for the beginning seamster who has a basic knowledge of their sewing machine. We will learn pattern layout, sewing in a zipper, adding a lining, and pleats. Beginning Knitting
Sundays November 7th and 14th ; 3:30-5pm
Class Fee: $25
Materials Needed: size 11 or size 13 knitting needles and two skeins of worsted weight (medium thick) yarn.
Keep your hands busy with a skill that’s both relaxing and productive! Knitting creates calm and a plethora of warm accessories and great gifts. This class is for absolute beginners---we’ll start with the basics and move on up to some serious scarf making. Seasoned knitter Adrienne of Crafty Beavers will teach us casting-on, basic knit and purl stitches and combinations, as well as casting-off. In this class we’ll make an cell phone cozie and start work on a scarf.

Spinning Wheel Primer
Monday, November 8th; 6-8pm
Class Fee: $20
Have you thought about purchasing a spinning wheel but want to try it out first? Lexie of Balaton Fibers will cover the basic parts of the spinning wheel and what to look for when purchasing a wheel. Each student will take home a yarn sample they spin. This is a small class so sign up fast!

Cable Knitting Crash Course

Take your knitting to the next level! In this one session, you’ll learn the techniques to create beautiful cabled patterns on your scarves and hats. Adrienne from Crafty Beavers will guide you through the necessary skills and you’ll walk away confident to cable!

Introduction to Amigurumi

Materials Needed: Please bring yarn of your choice and a crochet hook smaller than the suggested gauge.
Create your own nest of unique amigurumi creatures! From cuddly to creepy, you’ll learn the design and crochet skills necessary to create any style of creature you prefer! In this class, you’ll learn how to make common shapes used in amigurumi and sketch and design your own creature. Amigurumi techniques and tips will be taught and immediately employed in the creation of your very own one-of-a-kind crocheted pal. Intermediate class: basic crochet skills required.

Introduction to Origami

Introduce (or re-introduce) yourself to the wonderful world of paper folding. We’ll cover some basic folds & bases. Projects both practical (boxes, envelopes) & whimsical (balloons, cranes) will be covered. Each student will receive papers to take home and use for their own projects.

Project Sew: Hostess Apron

Get ready for Thanksgiving dinner with a beautiful hostess apron! Make it for yourself or as a gift for your holiday host! In this class, you’ll use a kit featuring pre-cut fabric pieces in a variety of delicious designer fabrics to sew up the project in one short evening. Instructor Carolyn Deer will guide you though the ins and outs of completing a full apron and you’ll walk away with the skills and step by step instructions to complete many more on your own! This is a project for advanced beginners—basic sewing skills required.

Project Sew: Oilcloth Tote Bag
Saturday, October 9th 2-5pm

A simple project that will have you sewing and toting in no time! Spend a Saturday afternoon learning or refreshing basic sewing skills to create a sturdy and colorful tote bag. The oilcloth bag is waterproof and just wipes clean and will get you used to working with thick, heavy duty materials.

Introduction to Cross-Stitch

Cross-stitching is not just about ducks on pillowcases anymore! In the class, you’ll use a kit from Subversive Cross Stitch to get started stitching away on your own sassy saying. You’ll learn neat starts and finishes, pattern reading, counting out cross stitch, and french knots.The instructor will also share information and resources on how to create your own patterns.

Introduction to Spinning Yarn

Are you a fiber fanatic? Take your fanaticism to the next level and learn to spin your own yarn! And with the skills you learn in this session, you’ll walk away with the ability to spin skeins for all your knitter friends for the holidays!

Advanced Beginner’s Knitting Clinic

Did you learn to knit then never make it past the basic knit scarf? If you’ve mastered the basic knit and purl stitches but feel shaky about everything else, then this is the clinic for you! Seasoned knitter Adrienne of CraftyBeavers will show you the ropes of basic knitting skills including increasing, decreasing, and changing colors. She’ll also provide trouble-shooting guidance for common knitting mistakes like the dreaded dropped stitch. You’ll also walk away with basic pattern reading skills and the confidence to tackle any beginner’s level pattern. All this in one afternoon!

Introdution to Zines and Zine-Making

New to zines? Thinking about writing and distributing a zine but don’t know where to start? Start with this workshop! Here, you’ll learn a bit about the history of zines and their cultural significance before embarking on a project of your own. The workshop will survey different styles of zine design and familiarize you with the tools of the trade. You’ll construct your own mini-zine over the two sessions and learn about distribution channels in the final session.

Beginning Needlefelting
Monday, October 18th; 6-8pm

A super fun, easy-to-learn craft with tons of possibilities! With the basic skills you learn in this workshop, you can create any number of 2D and 3D objects and creatures made entirely of wool. In the workshop itself, you’ll learn a dry needle felting technique and use this to create a 3D needlefelt appliqué on flat felt background. It fun and great for beginners!

Intermediate Knitting
Wednesdays October 27th and November 3rd; 6:30-8pm
Class Fee: $25
Materials Needed: size 10.5/11 circular needles 16 inches or smaller, size 10.5 double

If you already know the basics of knitting, it’s time to take your skills to the next level—knitting in the round! In this class, you will learn all the skills necessary to create a striped hat. Lessons include circular knitting, adding stripes, and intermediate pattern reading. Once you’ve mastered this skill set, the possibilities are endless!

5 year Anniversary Extravaganza!


Celebrate five years of handmade fun at the Wholly Craft Anniversary Extravaganza! Join us on Friday, October 1st from 7-11pm for a storewide sale and anniversary blow-out featuring some of our favorite community partners. Bird and Flower will kick off the evening with a special live performance. Local designer AmyD will present a fashion show featuring her latest looks modeled by The Ohio Rollergirls with hair and makeup by the stylists at Lucky 13 salon. Thought Co will be on hand all night for live screenprinting—bring your own shirts or have one created on the spot. Explosive doorprizes from Stinkybomb Soap will be doled out throughout the evening. And, no party would be complete without cake—in this case, a delicious Pattycake cake!

We so excited to be celebrating five years and so grateful for all the support this community has given us! So, thank you, thank you, thank you to all of our crafters, patrons, and supporters—we’re raising a glass to all of you and hope you can join us to celebrate and kick off the next five years!

Do you dream of having a stitched pinup or darling dachshund on your pillow or skirt? Well here’s your chance to make it happen! In this workshop, you will learn several basic embroidery stitches and how to put them to use in your own designs. Also, you’ll learn multiple fun and easy image transfer methods to ensure that almost any image will be ready to be rocked (with an embroidery needle) onto your fabric. Local designer and super fun instructor AmyD has been incorporating embroidery into her designs for years and will share all the best tricks of the trade!

Project Sew: Chalkcloth Banner
Wednesday, September 22nd; 6-8pm

Materials Fee: $25 (all materials provided in a kit)
Banners and bunting are all the rage these days! Colorful flags make any occasion seem festive and can be used over and over again. The banner you’ll create in this workshop is extra special—one side of the flag is made of chalkboard cloth so you can write a new message for each occasion. This project is beginner level and is a great introduction to working with thicker fabrics like oilcloth. All materials are provided—you are welcome to either bring your machine or share the one provided.

Instructors Wanted!


We’ve recently revamped our class policies and instructor contracts and we’re looking to add to our class roster for the fall. Our shop specializes in beginner and intermediate level classes in a wide variety of craft skills. Potential instructors must have at least 5 years experience with their craft medium and some teaching/training experience.

If interested, please email whollycraftclasses@yahoo.com with your contact information, a summary of your teaching/training experience and detailed descriptions of the classes you would be interested in teaching. Queries must be received by 12pm on Friday, August 20th.

If we think we might be a good fit, we’ll email you with details on our class policies and teacher compensation and ask for a formal class proposal and in-person interview. Interviews will be conducted next week and classes will begin in October.

Darn It! : a drop in darning workshop
Thursday, 6/10: 7pm-9pm
Sliding scale fee
Rip a hole in your favorite sweater? Attacked by moths? Live with a cat who eats socks (I do)? Learn the lost art of mending knitwear! Beckie will show you the basics of darning clothes that have seen better days. You’ll be busting out that favorite cardigan again in no time! The instruction part of the class will only last about 30 minutes, so feel free to drop in at any point between 7 and 9pm!

Unflattering Portraits By Rev. Aitor

Why put your best face forward when you can treasure a hilariously unflattering portrait of yourself for years to come? Words can not do these portraits justice, so here’s a link to the gallery of unflattering portraits! A couple of lucky folks have the opportunity to have their own portraits done this Thursday! May Workshops at Wholly Craft!

Beginning Knitting

Sundays, May 16th and 23rd, 3:30-5pm

Class Fee: $25

Materials Needed: size 11 knitting needles and one skein of worsted weight (means medium thick)yarn. (supplies can be purchased next door at Wonderknit!)

Keep your hands busy this season with a skill that’s both relaxing and productive! Knitting creates calm and a plethora of warm accessories and great gifts. This class is for absolute beginners---we’ll start with the basics and move on up to some serious scarf making. Seasoned knitter Adrienne of the Crafty Beavers will teach us casting-on, basic knit and purl stitches, changing colors, and casting-off. In this class we’ll make an ipod/cell phone cozie and start work on a scarf.

Sewing For Baby: 3D Baby Block

Thursday, May 20th, 6-8pm

Class Fee: $15

Materials Fee: $10

Is there a new little one in your life? Learn how to create unique, handmade toys to share with that special little somebody! In this beginner’s level class, you’ll utilize hand sewing techniques to create a 3D object. You’ll walk away with a super soft, fabric block that they’ll be sure to hang on to for years to come!

Soft Sculpture Workshop

Sunday, May 23rd, 12-2pm

Class Fee: $15

All Materials Provided

During this workshop with May wall gallery artist Helma Groot, you will create your own soft sculptures. You will make simple patterns, and use recycled fabrics and stuffing to make objects of your own designs. Helma uses many soft sculptures in her mobiles, and she will show workshop participants the techniques she uses to create her artwork.

Proper maintenance and care will also be covered during this lab. In order to ensure personalized instruction, the lab is limited to 3 people, so reserve your spot quickly!

Urban Circus


Urban Circus: New small works by Helma Groot. Curated by Stephanie Rond. Visit the wall gallery in May to experience Urban Circus, a collection of two and three dimensional works inspired by Alexander Calder's circus. The mobiles and paintings deal loosely with the idea of what we do to earn money, what we own, what we take along, and what is most important to us.

Handmade Nation Screening and Crafty Cotillion Trunk Show!


We're so excited to co-sponsor the Columbus premiere of Handmade Nation, a documentary by Faythe Levine chronicling the rise of the indie craft movement. And, the screening is held in conjunction with our Spring Trunk featuring new works from our members.


The screening will be held Saturday, May 8th at 3pm at Studio 35 (3055 Indianola Ave.). The trunk show will precede the screening from 1-3pm. Arrive early to enjoy a beer and shop for the perfect handmade Mother's Day gift.


Tickets to the screening are $5 and will be available the day of the show. The trunk show is absolutely free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by Studio 35 , Wholly Craft!, and the Columbus Crafty Cotillion.

Introduction to Embroidery

Do you dream of having a stitched pinup or darling dachshund on your pillow or skirt? Well here’s your chance to make it happen! In this workshop, you will learn several basic embroidery stitches and how to put them to use in your own designs. Also, you’ll learn multiple fun and easy image transfer methods to ensure that almost any image will be ready to be rocked (with an embroidery needle) onto your fabric. Local designer and super fun instructor AmyD has been incorporating embroidery into her designs for years and will share all the best tricks of the trade!

Introduction to Needlefelting

Wednesday, April 14th 6-8pm

Class Fee: $15, Materials Fee: $15 (all materials included)

A super fun, easy-to-learn craft with tons of possibilities! With the basic skills you learn in this workshop, you can create any number of 2D and 3D objects and creatures made entirely of wool. In the workshop itself, you’ll learn a dry needle felting technique and use this to create a 3D needlefelt appliqué on flat felt background. It fun and great for beginners!

Sewing Lab: Patterns and Alterations

Sunday, April 25th 12-2pm

Class Fee: $18

Are you trying to alter a garment and it's just not working? Or just puzzled by a pattern? Please bring any sewing supplies, fabric, your pattern, and a sewing machine (if needed) and with the help of sewing expert, Emily of Umbrella Girl Productions, you’ll "make it work" An excellent lab option for anyone trying to move their skills to the next level!
